Common Causes of Drain Clogs

Understanding Drain Clogs and Prevention

To effectively address drain issues, it’s crucial to understand their common causes. Here are a few key factors that often contribute to clogs:

  • Grease Buildup: Pouring grease down the sink can lead to significant buildup over time. Instead, let grease cool and dispose of it in the trash.
  • Hair and Soap Scum: In bathrooms, hair and soap scum often combine to create stubborn clogs. Regularly cleaning your drain covers and using hair catchers can minimize this problem.
  • Foreign Objects: Items like paper towels, dental floss, and food scraps can obstruct pipes. Make sure to only flush toilet paper and dispose of other items properly.
  • Tree Roots: In some cases, tree roots can invade sewer lines, causing blockages. Regular inspections can help identify these issues before they escalate.

The Importance of Regular Drain Cleaning

Regular drain cleaning is essential for maintaining the health of your plumbing system. Many homeowners often overlook this critical aspect of home maintenance, but it can save you time, money, and headaches in the long run. Here’s why routine drain cleaning should be a priority:

  • Preventative Maintenance: Just like your car needs regular oil changes, your drains benefit from routine cleaning. This helps remove buildup from soap, grease, and other debris before it becomes a significant clog.
  • Improved Drainage: Regular cleaning helps ensure that water flows smoothly through your pipes, preventing slow drainage or backups. This can enhance the overall efficiency of your plumbing system.
  • Cost Savings: Addressing minor clogs early can prevent costly repairs associated with major blockages or sewer line issues. Investing in regular maintenance can save you from expensive emergency plumbing services.
  • Health and Hygiene: Clogged drains can lead to unpleasant odors and can even create an environment for mold and bacteria growth. Keeping your drains clean helps ensure a healthier home environment.

One Slow Sink? Or the Whole Bathroom?

All of the sewer pipes are connected together under your home and flow out as a single pipe to the city sewer or private septic tank in typical residential construction. Knowing this can give you some clues about how big the clog is and how far away it is from the backed up fixture.

Clearing the Clog

On each Justice Plumbing drain truck, we carry three different sizes of drain snakes (sewer machine cables). In addition, we carry several different fixture-specific drain cleaning tools. No matter how tough the clog is or where it’s located on the system, we’ve got you covered.

Fixture Clogs

If the clog is located in the fixture itself or in that fixture’s p-trap, then we will usually clear the clog by running a small drain snake down through that fixture’s drain or clear the stoppage by taking apart the slip-joint drain pipes underneath the sink. As we are working inside the house, we lay out a drop cloth to keep everything clean, and we have plenty of clean rags and Lysol to make sure your kitchen or bathroom is spotless after our work.

Main Line Clog

If the clog is located further down in the system, then we will usually clear that with our large sewer machine outfitted with the properly sized sewer cable and sewer cleaning head. First, we need to determine the proper access point or cleanout. This may be outside in the flower bed, on the exterior wall of the home, under the sink, or at the fixture itself. This may be on the roof at one of the sewer vent pipes. Most of the time, the best access point is pretty straightforward, but we have diagnostic equipment if needed to verify.
