A hybrid water heater is a combination of a tank-style water heater and a tankless water heater. It takes the best benefits from each system and works to overcome the disadvantages of the other. A hybrid water heater supplies hot water in a volume comparable to tank-style water heaters, but it is almost as energy efficient as a tankless water heater.
Did you know that your water heater is one of the most inefficient appliances in your home?
According to energy.gov, electric water heaters account for an average of 18 percent of your electricity costs. Pretty much like anything else, the older your water heater the less energy efficient it is.
How It Works
A hybrid water heater has both a water holding tank and an on-demand heating system. The holding tank is significantly smaller than the tank-style water heater, typically holding only three to eight gallons of water. Hybrid water heaters are more energy efficient than tank-style water heaters as the they only preheat small amounts of water. Like a tankless water heater, a hybrid water heater has a flow-activated water heating system. The combination of holding tank and flow-activated water heating system allows hybrid water heaters to supply hot water to a variety of taps at the same time.
